Primo, the first Egyptian vulture is born in Sardinia !

A European LIFE Program is presently ongoing to protect the Griffon vulture in Sardinia(LIFE Under Griffon Wings). It started on September 1st 2015 and will be running until August 31st 2020.
It was developed by theUniversity in Sassari in cooperation with the town of Bosa, the Fo.Re.S.T.A.S Agency. and the Sardinia Forest and Environmental Monitoring Agency.

In June 2019, within the LIFE program, two Egyptian vultures were seen in the Porto Conte region.

This was very positive news as there are very few Egyptian vultures in Italy (10-13 couples). It proved that the adopted conservation measures to protect the Griffon vultures in Sardinia are also useful and effective for other scavengers !

Then, a case of Egyptian vulture successful breeding was reported : the Porto Conte region hosted the first Egyptian Vulture chick : baby Primo !

Now, the Fo.Re.S.T.A.S. agency is collecting genetic samples in order to find out the origin of the couple. The two birds are still living in Sardinia and it seems they have become sedentary. A community has settled in the Balearic islands and the couple may come from there.

2019 was a very good breeding season in Sardinia for the Griffon vulture and the first Egyptian vulture. This gives much hope for 2020 !
